The Standard That Defines All the Others: IIAR 1-2022

Refrigeration Insights series. Season 3: The IIAR Standards, installment 1 of 10.

When two engineers argue about a “machinery room”, are they talking about the same thing? And when a contractor assures the plant owner that the system is “packaged”? What exactly does “design pressure” mean in a construction contract?

In industrial refrigeration, many technical, contractual and regulatory conflicts do not come from a bad calculation but from two people using the same word for different things. That is why IIAR decided its first standard would not be about compressors or valves. It would be about words.

What the IIAR 1 standard is

ANSI/IIAR 1-2022 is the American National Standard for Definitions and Terminology Used in IIAR Standards. Its purpose, in its own words, is to provide a unified set of definitions that brings clarity to engineers, contractors, end users and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).

It is the shortest standard in the family: three chapters. Purpose, scope and an extensive glossary of definitions that runs from “building opening” to the pressure terms. But its role is structural: whenever another IIAR standard uses a defined term, the legal and technical meaning of that term is the one set by IIAR 1.

How the glossary is built

An interesting detail of the process: definitions are not born in this standard. They are introduced and approved through public review in the source standard where they are first used (for example, IIAR 2 for design or IIAR 6 for maintenance). Periodically, those definitions are moved into IIAR 1 and removed from the source standard.

The result is a living glossary that grows with every revision cycle of the other standards. The 2022 edition replaces the 2017 edition precisely because the industry vocabulary moved on: new technologies, new equipment, new terms.

Three definitions worth the price of admission

Design pressure. The maximum pressure for which a specific part of a closed-circuit refrigeration system is designed. The standard distinguishes it from operating pressure, which is any pressure within the range at which the system actually operates. Confusing the two has direct consequences for relief valve selection and for pressure testing.

Packaged system. A prefabricated, pre-assembled closed-circuit refrigeration system that contains all the essential equipment, piping and devices. It may or may not be enclosed within its own cabinet or frame. The definition matters because several installation and machinery room requirements change depending on whether the system is packaged or field-erected.

Cascade system. A refrigeration system with two or more independent refrigerant circuits. It is the definition that enables the whole chapter on ammonia-CO2 systems that the industry is adopting across the region.

Why it matters to your plant

If your company operates an ammonia system, IIAR 1 is the dictionary against which your manuals, your maintenance contracts and your audits are read. Three practical uses:

1) In purchasing specifications: referencing the IIAR 1 definitions avoids ambiguity between what the bid documents ask for and what the supplier quotes.

2) In process safety programs: procedures that use IIAR terminology hold up better under inspection, because the language matches the standard the auditor has on the table.

3) In training: a team of operators that shares a vocabulary makes fewer communication errors in the field, where a misunderstanding can be costly.

The standard is available in Spanish in the IIAR member portal, a concrete advantage for technical teams in the region.

The season that starts today

This article opens Season 3 of Refrigeration Insights: a weekly journey through the ten current IIAR standards, in the order of a refrigeration system's life cycle: define, design, install, start up, maintain, operate, evaluate existing systems and decommission.

Next week: IIAR 2, the mother standard, the one that defines how a safe ammonia system is designed from the first line of the drawing.
